We visited: ribs and more, Portafino, El Rancho. The a la carts we visted were really good. We went to both La Hacienda and La Dalia but we preferred La Hacienda. There was always something for everyone and many choices to choose from.
The buffets were typically the same foods every day with small changes. However, we always enjoyed an evening walk along the beach and i even managed to find some nice seashells! Thankfully the pools made up for the beach! Food: -The food was always great no matter where we went. There were some clear spots but you had to wade through the sea weed or over the rocks. The beach was really rocky in the White Sands area, and, to be honest, it wasnt much better further down. Beach: -We knew prior to coming that the beach wouldnt be great so we expected it. I know thats their job but its frustrating when youre trying to relax and they keep trying to say their spiel even when you say no. They didnt really come as much at La Isla so we stayed there more often. We said no everyday but they kept coming. The one annoying thing was that they always had people coming to upsell the spa or their photographs. They always had activities to do as well. There were always plenty of places to sit in and out of the water. Both pools were great though! They were clean and refreshing. We like la Isla better because it was more quiet. Pool: -We spend most of our days at the White Sand Pool and La Isla. We didnt really get to enjoy the balcony. All of our furniture was covered in lizard or bird poo and was never cleaned. However, they need to invest in plastic chairs/furniture. I totally understand that we are in the jungle and things happen. We were not happy about this but the room did make up for it. The worst was the smell, it smelled all over the hotel and there was no compensation or not even any warning that this would be happening. We booked the room for the lake and the opportunity to use the canoes, which we were not able to do. The lake was drained the second or third day we were there until the end of our visit which was really disappointing. One issue we had with our room was the lake and the balcony. It was a bit of a walk to Colonial though. It wasnt too far from the pool or the lake. The room was also very clean and well stocked. Room: -We booked the Romance Bungalow on the Lake. The grounds were also very clean the whole time we were there. It was nice to be able to go between the different hotels and be able to experience things from the other hotels. The coatis were my favorite! I feel like it took us a few days to become comfortable with all the walking paths and we were able to get to where we needed to go. The walking wasnt that bad though because we saw all kinds of cute critters a long the way! There were a ton of iguanas, different birds, capybaras, flamingos and Coatis.
There were a lot of things not opened on the White Sands side, so we had to go to Colonial often. We discovered that this was a great choice as the food was excellent and the service was great! There were definitely pros and cons to our stay: Grounds: -As mentioned, this is a huge resort. We couldnt find the buffet so had to settle for the Ribs and More a la cart. Again, we were starving and didnt want to wait for someone to take our order and make the food.
There were a few ala cartes that we were easily able to find but we wanted to go to the buffet. As mentioned above, we were starving and were trying to find a place to eat. The main issue is that this hotel is too big and the map they provide as well as the app is useless when trying to find your way around. There was no information in the room which was a little frustrating but i will get back to that later. The staff member who came with us told us to call the front desk but they told us we had to go back to the lobby. We did have one issue as our keys didnt work. The staff was amazing in bringing us and our luggage to our bungalow on the lake. The Reception area is gorgeous and so clean. Check in was easy, it wasnt busy so it was pretty fast. So when we arrived we were tired, hot and starving. I would recommend a private transfer instead of the provided airline transfer. Then it took over 2 hours to get to the resort. We had a terrible experience at the airport (the luggage guy stopped doing his job and we were left waiting over an hour for our luggage). When we first arrived, we were not happy campers.
